Equinix has opened its fifth data center in Dallas as it moves to meet demand in a critical communications hub that routes Internet traffic between the East and West coasts of the U.S. as well as to Latin America.

Equinix announced today that the new facility, called DA6, is fully operational. DA6 is housed on three floors of the Dallas Infomart complex, which also hosts three other Equinix data centers.

DA6 will offer more than 60,000 square feet of colocation space when it’s fully built out. That’s a major share of the space offered at the five Dallas data centers, which will provide 230,000 square feet combined when DA6 is completed.

“We have invested significantly in the region and, as a result, we now operate the largest Internet exchange in the south central United States,” said Karl Strohmeyer, president of Americas Equinix. “Furthermore, we offer excellent interconnection options for companies that depend on fast connections to customers and partners to meet their business needs.”

The DA6 facility opens at a time of increasing demand for data center colocation in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, which is home to 18 Fortune 500 companies and more than 3,000 medium- to large-size businesses.

Equinix has been in Dallas since 2000, when it built what was just the fourth data center in the entire company there. Equinix now has 100 International Business Exchange ™ (IBX®) data centers across 32 major metro areas globally.

Equinix’s early presence in Dallas played a key role in establishing the company’s foundation and the foundation of the entire U.S. Internet infrastructure. Equinix’s Dallas data centers now operate an Internet Exchange that’s more than 10 times the size of any other exchange in the south central U.S.

Equinix’s Dallas data centers also host more than 40 cloud service providers, 30 content and digital media companies and more than 100 network service providers – the most of any data center provider in the Dallas metro area.

Equinix spent $34 million on the first phase of DA6’s construction, which added 450 cabinets – one-third of the 1,350 cabinets the facility will have at full build.
