Riding the Mobile Revolution: The Growth of Mobile Video

Rory Murphy

We are at the beginning of a mobile revolution. Mobile technology is disrupting every industry and mobile data, video, and TV services are fast becoming an essential part of both the consumer and enterprise environment. Whether it’s checking the news, watching the latest music video or viral marketing campaign, mobile video is changing the way we consume content.

According to Cisco’s Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast, over two thirds of the world’s mobile data traffic will be video by 2017. Matt Stagg, Senior Manager of Network Strategy for EE UK, suggested that this growth will be driven by a combination of the faster networks arising from 4G, the gradual increase in screen size on mobile devices and changing consumer behaviour. It no longer matters if it’s at home, at work or on the move, people want access to video and TV content regardless of their location and for businesses, it’s important to keep up.

So how does this change impact the data centre?

The data centre industry has changed significantly over the past few years, specifically as a result of the evolution of the digital media industry and rise of mobile. As a result, businesses are starting to think about the data centre in a different way, considering it as a strategic asset, vital to the future success of the business.

Rather than observing the data centre from a traditional colocation or cost standpoint, many organisations now view the data centre as an interconnection platform. A connection to a dynamic ecosystem of business partners, networks and customers. An innovation partner for the future.

At Equinix we work with content and digital media customers and help advise them on how they deploy their technology platforms and infrastructures. As a result, we have an enhanced understanding of industry – from the creation of mobile content, its movement through the mobile ecosystem, to the delivery to the end device.

Working with customers across the mobile and media value chain, we have the ability to help organisations grow and succeed. For instance, our Software Validation Centres within our facilities can help organisations to validate and test infrastructure and application designs to ensure they meet performance requirements before full-scale deployment.

So, as mobile video continues to be pushed to the forefront, more and more businesses will look to the data centre to provide the interconnection they need. And at Equinix, we are well placed to support them as they embark on this journey.
