10 (More) Things You Didn’t Know about Equinix

Earlier this year, we filled you in on 10 things you didn’t know about Equinix. But, surely, you guessed there were more than 10.

In this post, we add to the list, and we again encourage you to again test your data center knowledge. Please refer to the grading scale at the end of the post for some perspective on your score.

#1 – Equinix is a member of the NASDAQ-100 Index, which includes the 100 largest non-financial stocks listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Equinix was added to the index in December 2012.

#2 – Equinix Chief Executive Officer Stephen M. Smith is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Smith then served eight years in the U.S. Army, where he commanded two artillery units and was an aide-de-camp in the office of the Commander in Chief of the U.S. Armed Forces in the Pacific.

#3 – Three of Equinix’s International Business Exchange (IBX®) data centers in Chicago are located in an historic building that once held printing presses for phone books and catalogs. The floors were built to support 250 pounds per square foot, perfect for today’s dense racks of computing equipment.

#4 – Equinix has been listed among Deloitte’s Technology Fast 500™ for four consecutive years. The listing ranks the 500 fastest growing technology, media, telecommunications, life sciences and clean technology companies in North America.

#5 Equinix is the only data center provider to connect to both Windows Azure and Amazon Web Services.

#6 – Equinix is testing the use of a fuel cell for energy production and fire suppression at the FR4 IBX in Frankfurt, Germany. The fuel cell is expected to generate 800,000 kilowatt hours of electricity annually. And the process that produces the power emits nitrogen-enriched air, decreasing nearby oxygen levels and thus reducing the risk of fire in the surrounding area.

#7 – Ninety percent of our customers say they’d recommend us to a peer.

#8 – Equinix uses a deep lake water cooling system at our TR1 Toronto IBX. The system taps a permanent reservoir of cold water 270 feet below the surface of Lake Ontario. It’s an energy-saving alternative to using compressors to chill the water.

#9 Equinix has invested an industry-leading $7 billion in our global interconnection platform since our founding in 1998.

#10 Equinix recently debuted a new, tablet-friendly home page rich in factoids about the company. Check it out.
