It’s All Just a Popularity Contest: 2013’s Best-Read Blog Posts

As a blog for the world’s leading data center provider, we deal with things like connecting to the public cloud and building digital ecosystems. Topics that really set the Internet on fire—cats that flush toilets or babies that bite fingers, for instance—are way too much of a stretch to work into our blogs.

But just because our blog posts don’t go viral doesn’t mean they aren’t interesting, or well-read.  The numbers for 2013 are in, and a retrospective on our most popular blog posts follows. It turns out our readers liked pictures of data centers, fake news, geek speak, the cloud and more pictures of data centers.

Check it out, and make a resolution to keep reading in 2014.

PICTURES OF ME
Simply put, pictures of data centers dominated Interconnections’ most-read list in 2013. Three of the top five blog posts and four of the top seven were data center galleries. Take a look back and it’s easy to see why.

Here’s a shot from our most popular post of 2013, “10 Beautiful Photos of Equinix SV1 and SV5 Data Centers” (in Silicon Valley):

GEEKED OUT
Our “How to Speak Like a Data Center Geek” series tapped into hidden demand for knowledge about the unique and obscure vocabulary used at Equinix. The debut of the now six-part series was the second most popular post of 2013. In it, we gave Equinix’s alternative definitions for words such as cage, suite and mantrap (which you can see from the photo also traps women):

The second part of the series finished at No. 13, while the fifth installment rounded out the Top 15 and explained the picture below in just one paragraph:

FOOLING AROUND: It’s possible some readers shrugged when they looked at the headline of our third most popular post, “Study: Equinix to Have Data Center on Moon by 2015.” Perhaps they reasoned that Equinix’s dominant data center presence on Earth meant moon expansion was inevitable. It seems more likely that our readers first noticed the April 1 date and enjoyed the joke.

IN THE CLOUD
Cloud services are a big deal for Equinix, they’re a big deal for our customers and they’re apparently at least a pretty big deal for readers of this blog. Two of our top 10 most popular posts of 2013 were cloud services related.

“Window Azure Connections Enabled at Equinix Data Centers” came in at No. 8, followed closely by “Amazon Expands AWS Offering Inside Equinix” at No. 9.
