How participants in the mobile video industry are dealing with the problems of increased video traffic is a hot topic and, recognising the rapid growth in mobile video, originally led Equinix and mobile network EE in the UK to jointly form the Mobile Video Alliance, greatly enhanced when we merged our approach with the DTG, the UK industry association for digital television.
At the DTG Summit 2015 we shared a new infographic which was created to illustrate the end to end ecosystem and, by charting that, help foster further collaboration with other key innovators and enablers throughout the industry.
Equinix can often see at first-hand how companies who deploy their technology platforms with us are dealing with problems of growth, expected by Gartner to grow 59% this year alone,[i] By providing an interconnection platform for those companies to exchange that content we are able to provide businesses with a purpose built facility to reliably run and grow their operations and securely connect to their partners and customers.
This reveals that a great deal of collaboration and communication is required before consumers, who expect a faultless quality of experience, see the end result of streamed live events, online video games and On Demand TV on their mobile devices.
First, the applications that host video content need to be built and tested, many using the latest cloud based technologies to run on. Second, that content needs to be digitally produced and prepared before the final files or streams are delivered to Broadband and Mobile Networks for consumers to view them.
A robust and reliable infrastructure is vital to combat poor performance anywhere in the mobile video ecosystem and companies that are strategically located close to their production and end user partners, such as CDNs, ISPs and Mobile Networks, can benefit. This proximity can also help to process, store and analyse an increasing amount of data that sits alongside the video content.
Our opportunity to participate in key industry forums like the MVA also ensures that we can continue to contribute to the kind of industry collaboration that will address new – and future – challenges that the mobile video ecosystem will present.
