Newsflash: Not all Data Centers are Created Equal

Samuel Lee

As Gartner pointed out in its recent Data Center and Colocation Services, Asia/Pacific, 2015 market trends report, strong demand for colocation and hosting in the region is creating major opportunities. However, Gartner added a rather telling caveat to that positive sounding news. Specifically that, with increased competition tempering revenue growth and profit margins, business strategy managers must learn how to compete effectively in this market.

While translating to data center business, it is fair to say not all data centers are created equal. In fact, some of them are much more equal than others!

At the NetworkWorld Asia Information Management Awards ceremony on Thursday 4 June, the industry found out which data center provider is currently first among equals. And, for the second year in a row the answer was Equinix, which won in the Data Center Services category.

Of course, not all awards are created equal either. However, the NetworkWorld Asia Information Management Awards do a better job than many at recognizing the innovative solutions and technologies that information security, storage and data management providers have developed in this region. More to the point, they focus on solutions and technologies that? were developed in response to the needs of organizations operating in an increasingly mobile, hyper-connected, technology-disrupted and security-challenged business environment.

The judging criteria in the most recent awards were as broad as they were stringent. They covered everything from the reputation of the vendor in the marketplace, the features and USPs of the solution, acceptance of technology and/or brand as well as feedback from users on the deployment of the solution. Durability, scalability and, naturally, the quality of the service were compelling contributing factors.

At the 2015 event, a total of 41 awards were given to 40 winners who were chosen from a shortlist determined by the editors of Network World Asia. A hundred regional CIOs and IT heads of end-user organizations were also invited to vote for the vendor they felt made the most advances in the fields of Information Security, Storage and Data Management over the last few years.

Speaking on behalf of Equinix, I can say that we are honoured to have won the Information Management Award for Data Center Services for the second consecutive year. The recognition of our success in this area is a true reflection on the growing need for interconnectivity and collaboration among modern businesses.

It goes without saying that Equinix is focused on ensuring our clients benefit from our vast ecosystem of partners, networks and carriers, enabling them to excel in their industries, regardless of location. Our data centers and networks mean our clients can reach more customers, share information faster and extend the reach of their IT services.

What’s more, our game-changing solutions, such as the Equinix Cloud Exchange our world-class cloud ecosystem, provide clients with the high-performing, on-demand, direct-access to multiple cloud service providers they need to innovate and succeed in the interconnected era.

But, that’s not the end of Equinix’s award story. Earlier in May, our data center in Japan, Osaka1 received the Interior Planning Award for its Interior Design and Visual Presentation in the International Design Awards 2014. And once again, in March to be precise – we were fortunate enough to win another two. This time was the prestigious Platinum Award for the BCA-IDA Green Mark for New Data Centers. It was secured by Mapletree Industrial Trust (MIT) for the work it did on our brand new purpose-built Singapore data center known as SG3. Our first data center (SG1) was also awarded the BCA-IDA Green Mark Certification.

Awarded by the Building and Construction Authority (“BCA”) and Infocomm Development Authority (“IDA”) of Singapore for data center developments, the BCA-IDA Green Mark is the highest green accolade that any building in Singapore can receive.

Individually, an award isn’t all that important. But together they paint a picture that speaks volumes about which vendors are just talking the talk and which are really walking the walk.

At Equinix, we’re not just walking. We’re running full speed!
