Last year, we made an important commitment to the expansion of our footprint in Osaka, home to the second-highest concentration of businesses in Japan, as one of the essential components to drive the growth of the digital economy. We are therefore pleased to declare our new International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data center in Osaka – OS3 – is open!
Japan is the world’s third-largest economy, advocating an ultra-smart society where everything will be connected. To actualize the first chapter of the country’s digital vision, the Government of Japan is proactively implementing digitalization in business, providing plentiful support to SMEs and startups for them to leverage on digital technology to address their ever-evolving business environment. In order to handle the massive volume and flow of data generated from the widespread usage of technology, digital leaders in Japan are exhibiting a sense of urgency in partnering with dependable digital partners with reliable local and global coverage for optimal performance.
In the meantime, the Kansai region will continue to grow in importance to Japan’s digital economy. According to the latest Global Interconnection Index (GXI Vol. 5), Osaka is forecast to grow its interconnection bandwidth at a 50% CAGR (compound annual growth rate) from 2020 to 2024. Hyperscalers such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, Google and Oracle are predicted to account for an exponential increase in interconnection bandwidth in Osaka. As the shift towards hybrid multicloud continues, these hyperscalers are expected to keep scaling up their investments in Osaka to address the growing requirements for high performance, consistency, security, resiliency and local data residency when it comes to cloud adoption.
This year, Osaka takes up the mantle to host World Expo 2025, hailed as “the Expo of a new era”, with its anticipated 28 million visitors from around the world. Echoing the philosophies of World Expo 2025, diversified technology is the bridge to connecting nations, and OS3 will serve as a robust digital infrastructure to support Osaka in hosting the Expo when it showcases myriad groundbreaking achievements for its global visitors.1
Opened and expected to complete by end of 2021, the first phase of OS3 will provide an initial capacity of 900 cabinets and more than 33,000 square feet of colocation space. The facility will ultimately accommodate 2,500 cabinets at full build out, with a total colocation space of more than 89,340 square feet. Directly connected to OS1, OS3 provides a wide range of interconnection solutions, including our own Equinix Fabric™. With a rich ecosystem of more than 25 network service providers, our Osaka campus enables businesses to interconnect with their own or any other company’s distributed infrastructure on Platform Equinix® in Tokyo and other parts of the world.
